The Adventures of a Girl Called Bicycle

by Christina Uss

This is a fun, magical story about a young girl who decides to ride her trusty bicycle across the country to meet her idol, a famous French cyclist. Along the way, she meets a variety of characters (some living, some not!) and discovers that she is, indeed, worthy of friendship. Warning: the mother/daughter relationship may make you shed a tear!

Property of the Rebel Librarian

I enjoyed this story so much, I read it in one sitting! (As a fellow librarian, I’m a bit biased.) After a banned book is discovered, the school’s PTO decides all books must be removed from the middle school library. Oh, and also, the students need teacher approval to read anything other than textbooks. Our protagonist, an avid reader, fights the system by creating her own secret library society. This story is chock full of family dynamics, first relationships and learning to not judge a book (or person) by their cover.

Forever Truffle

This book was a definite surprise! It made for a great read aloud for my kids, because it led to discussions about love, death and existence. It made these heavy subjects easy for kids to understand, as it was told through the eyes of a little boy (with excellent taste in music, I might add). We really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading its predecessor, Truffle.
