Thanksgiving Holiday Hours

We’re OPEN tomorrow, Tuesday, November 21, from 10am to 6pm, and then we’re taking a short break to recharge over the Thanksgiving holiday. SPL will be CLOSED Thursday-Saturday, November 23-25. We’ll REOPEN on Tuesday, November 28.

Wanna borrow some books but can’t make it into the library tomorrow? Call us, 367-5926, or email us, stonington.public.library@gmail.com. We’ll find a way to get you some reading materials for the holiday.

Edible Island: Food • Culture • Community

Jewish Latkes with Martha Spector

It’s always a joy to watch—and learn from—Martha Spector in the kitchen! She returns to Edible Island to present a latke workshop and tasting. We’re sourcing locally grown potatoes for the latkes and Maine heirloom apples and organic cream to make various toppings. Co-hosted by SPL and Healthy Island Project with grant support from Maine Humanities Council.

2-3:30pm Workshop (Email stonington.public.library@gmail.com to register.)

3:30-4:30pm Public tasting open to all! (No registration required.)

Poetry Open Mic with featured poet Marnie Reed Crowell

Every first Tuesday, all voices welcome!

Marnie Reed Crowell’s latest book, Outside, is a beautiful collection of poetry and full color photography that she considers “her love letter to the island.” It takes you through a calendar year on the island and visits every one of the Island Heritage Trust (IHT) preserves. Marnie refers to herself as a backyard birder, but living adjacent to Barred Island Preserve, she has quite the backyard.

Outside will be available for purchase with all proceeds going to IHT.

Holiday Storytime & Craft

‘Tis the season! We’ll have lots of holiday cheer at our December storytime and craft. Come paint a holiday picture frame—it’ll make a great gift for someone you love—and enjoy a read-aloud story with a cup of hot cocoa!

All kids can take home a free book, too! A gift from SPL to you!

Art & Art History Book Club

We’re discussing two titles in December: Why Art? by Eleanor Davis and Wall and Piece by Banksy. Both titles are faily short with more visual content than textual.

The SPL book club meets the fourth Monday of every month at 6:30pm. Readers can choose to participate either in person at SPL or online via Zoom. Email stonington.public.library@gmail.com to join the book club mailing list.

The Art & Art History series wraps up in January with Susan Sontag’s On Photography, and then we kick off a new theme—Food & Fiction—for the rest of 2024.
